Waiting is one of the hardest disciplines of the Christian life. We often mistake God’s silence for His absence or His delay for His denial. Yet Scripture reveals that waiting is never passive—it is an active season of trusting, growing, preparing, and drawing closer to Him. Through the examples of David, Isaiah, and even Jesus Himself, we discover that God’s waiting room is often where He does His deepest work.
Scripture Focus: Psalm 27:14, Isaiah 40:31
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
If I could be completely honest, waiting has never been one of my strengths.
I’m a planner by nature. When I see a path forward, I want to move. When I pray, I naturally hope God will answer quickly. But as I look back over the years, I’ve learned something humbling.
Every single time I’ve rushed ahead of God, I’ve made a mess of things.
Sometimes it was because I assumed I knew what God wanted before He had clearly revealed it. Other times I simply grew impatient and tried to help God accomplish His plan in my timing instead of His.
Every one of those moments taught me the same lesson:
Waiting may be difficult, but it is always worth it.
David understood that waiting wasn’t easy. That’s why he wrote,
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage…”
Waiting requires courage because it asks us to surrender control.
It means trusting God’s wisdom when we cannot see the outcome.
It means believing that His delays are not evidence that He has forgotten us—they are often evidence that He is still working.
God never wastes a waiting season.
Sometimes He’s preparing the opportunity.
Sometimes He’s changing the circumstances.
Sometimes He’s changing us.
One of the greatest misconceptions about waiting on the Lord is that it means doing nothing.
Isaiah paints a completely different picture.
Those who wait on the Lord don’t become weaker—they become stronger.
Biblical waiting is active.
It means opening God’s Word every day.
It means praying without ceasing.
It means obeying what He has already revealed.
It means continuing to serve faithfully where He has placed us.
It means preparing for tomorrow while remaining fully present today.
Waiting isn’t spiritual idleness.
It is active trust.
One thought has changed the way I view waiting more than almost any other.
Even Jesus waited.
Several times throughout the Gospels we’re told,
“His hour was not yet come.”
Jesus never forced the Father’s timetable.
He never rushed ahead.
He never acted independently of God’s perfect plan.
If the Son of God was willing to wait for the Father’s appointed hour, shouldn’t we trust His timing for our own lives?
Waiting isn’t weakness.
Waiting is worship.
It quietly declares,
“Father, I trust Your calendar more than mine.”
Before Jesus performed His first miracle…
Before He preached to the multitudes…
Before His public ministry began…
He spent forty days in the wilderness.
Those days weren’t empty.
They were filled with fasting.
Prayer.
Testing.
Temptation.
Preparation.
Satan repeatedly offered shortcuts.
Jesus repeatedly chose obedience.
The wilderness reminds us that preparation often comes before promotion.
Sometimes the very season we want to escape is the season God is using to prepare us for what comes next.
Waiting doesn’t give us permission to become apathetic.
It invites us to become faithful.
Continue reading Scripture.
Continue praying.
Continue serving.
Continue growing.
Continue preparing.
Continue loving the people God has placed in front of you today.
Don’t become so focused on tomorrow that you miss what God is doing right now.
Looking back over my life, the waiting seasons became some of God’s greatest classrooms. They deepened my faith, exposed my impatience, strengthened my trust, and reminded me that God was always working—even when I couldn’t yet see the results.
The blessing wasn’t only what God eventually gave me.
The blessing was who He was shaping me to become while I waited.
God’s waiting seasons are never wasted. They are opportunities for Him to strengthen our faith, prepare our hearts, and teach us to trust His perfect timing.
If you’re waiting on God for direction, an answered prayer, healing, or an open door, don’t stop pursuing Him.
Spend time in His Word.
Pray without ceasing.
Serve faithfully where you are.
Prepare for what He has ahead while remaining fully present in what He has entrusted to you today.
Father,
Teach me to wait well. Give me the courage to trust Your timing even when I cannot see what You’re doing. Help me resist the temptation to rush ahead of You, and instead draw closer to You through Your Word, through prayer, and through faithful obedience. Thank You for never wasting a season of waiting. Prepare my heart for whatever You have ahead, and help me remain faithful in what You’ve called me to do today.
