Just Take the Next Step!
When God Shows You the Next Step but Not the Whole Journey
What if God isn’t asking you to figure out the entire journey? What if He is simply asking you to trust Him enough to take the next step? Sometimes we want God to show us the whole picture. We want to know where we’re going, how everything is going to work out, and what’s waiting around the corner. And perhaps most of all, we want to know that the steps we’re taking are leading us exactly where we hope to be.
But walking by faith doesn’t always work that way.
Sometimes God gives us direction for the next step without showing us the destination. And that’s where trust becomes more than something we talk about. It becomes something we live.
Scripture Focus:
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5–6,
Additional Scriptures: Hebrews 11:8, Romans 10:17, 2 Corinthians 5:7, Psalm 119:105, Deuteronomy 7:9
Have you ever felt God leading you in a direction, but you couldn’t quite see where He was taking you?
Maybe He was prompting you to do something that felt a little outside your comfort zone.
Maybe you were facing a decision and didn’t have all the answers.
Maybe you were praying for direction, hoping God would lay out the entire plan.
Or maybe you knew what the next step was, but taking it required more faith than you felt you had.
If you’ve ever been there, I think you’ll understand this: Sometimes the hardest part of following God is taking the next step when we can’t see what comes after it.
But Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us that our responsibility is not to understand everything. It is to trust Him. And sometimes that means taking the next step before we can see the whole staircase.
When God Guides, We Follow
We often want God to give us a complete plan. We want the beginning, the middle, and the end. We want to know what to expect and how everything will work out.
But Scripture reminds us that God’s way of leading us doesn’t always include a complete explanation. Sometimes He simply calls us to follow. Think about Abraham.
Hebrews 11:8 tells us:
“By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.” Hebrews 11:8, KJV
Read that again. He went out, not knowing whither he went. Abraham obeyed God without knowing all the details of the journey ahead.
He didn’t have a complete itinerary.
He didn’t know every challenge he would face.
He didn’t have the kind of certainty we often wish we had before we move forward.
But he knew the One who had called him.
And that was enough for him to take the first step.
There is a lesson here for us. God may not reveal every detail of what He is doing in our lives. He may not answer every question we have or show us how all the pieces will fit together. But we can trust that the One who calls us is faithful. We don’t have to see the whole journey to follow the One who leads us.
Sometimes obedience begins with a simple, “Lord, I don’t know exactly where this is going, but I trust You enough to take the next step.” And sometimes that is precisely the step of faith God is asking us to take.
Faith Doesn’t Require a Complete Explanation
I think we sometimes confuse having faith with having certainty about what lies ahead. We want to feel confident about the outcome before we begin, and we want to know that everything will work out the way we expect. But if we already knew how everything was going to unfold, would we really need to trust God in the same way?
Faith doesn’t mean we know what tomorrow holds. It means we trust the One who holds tomorrow.
Proverbs 3:5 tells us: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5
Notice what we are told not to do. Lean not unto thine own understanding. That doesn’t mean we stop thinking, praying, seeking wise counsel, or using the understanding God has given us. It means we recognize that our understanding is limited. We can only see so much. We know what has happened. We can make plans for what might happen. But God sees what we cannot. Sometimes His direction will require us to trust Him beyond what we can presently understand.
That can be uncomfortable. We may wonder whether we heard Him correctly. We may question whether we are ready. We may wish He would give us just a little more information. But faith isn’t waiting until every question has been answered. Faith is trusting God enough to obey Him while some questions remain.
When we acknowledge Him in our decisions, our plans, and our everyday lives, we can trust Him to direct our paths. Not necessarily according to our timetable. Not always in the way we expected. But according to His wisdom and faithfulness.
Faith Grows With Every Step
Have you ever noticed how much easier it can be to trust God when you look back at what He has already done? You remember the prayer He answered. The door He opened. The strength He provided when you didn’t think you had any left. The way He carried you through something you once thought you couldn’t face. And suddenly, you realize that the God who was faithful then is still faithful now.
But sometimes we forget those things when we’re standing in the middle of a new uncertainty. We look at what we don’t know instead of remembering what we do know about Him.
Romans 10:17 tells us: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17
Our faith grows as we hear and receive the Word of God. As we spend time in Scripture, we are reminded of His character. We learn about His promises, and we see His faithfulness throughout generations. We begin to understand that our confidence doesn’t have to come from knowing exactly what will happen next. It can come from knowing the God who has promised never to forsake His own.
Every step of obedience gives us another opportunity to trust Him. Every time we choose His direction over our own understanding, we are learning to depend on Him. And every time we look back and recognize His faithfulness, we have another reminder of why we can trust Him moving forward.
Faith grows as we learn to trust God one step at a time. You don’t have to have tomorrow’s faith for tomorrow’s circumstances today. Walk with Him today. Trust Him today. Take the step He has placed before you today. And allow Him to strengthen your faith along the way.
Trusting God When the Way Is Unclear
Let’s be honest. Sometimes the next step is easy to identify. Other times, we pray and wait, and the way forward still seems unclear. We want direction. We want confirmation, and we want to know that we’re not moving ahead of God or missing something He wants us to see.
Sometimes the waiting can be just as difficult as the walking. But Scripture reminds us that we are called to walk by faith.
Paul writes:
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7
Walking by faith means our decisions aren’t based solely on what we can see with our natural eyes. We trust God’s Word, we seek His wisdom, we acknowledge Him in our ways, and we follow the light He provides.
Psalm 119:105 gives us a beautiful picture of that guidance: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105
Think about that for a moment. A lamp unto my feet. A light unto my path. The picture isn’t necessarily of a spotlight illuminating every mile ahead. It’s a lamp that gives light for the path before us. Enough light to see where to place our feet. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need.
We want God to show us the entire road. But He may be teaching us to walk closely with Him, trusting His Word to guide our steps. That doesn’t mean we should rush into decisions without prayer or wisdom. It means we don’t have to remain paralyzed simply because we cannot see every detail of the future.
When God has made the next step clear through His Word and direction, we can move forward in obedience. And when the way isn’t clear, we can keep seeking Him rather than trying to force our own path. We don’t need to know everything ahead when we are walking with the One who does.
One Day, You’ll Look Back
There’s something special about looking back over a journey and seeing how God has led you. Sometimes the steps that seemed small at the time become the very moments you recognize as turning points: The decision you were nervous to make, the opportunity you almost passed up, the season of waiting that taught you to depend on Him, the moment you obeyed without knowing how everything would work out. At the time, you may not have understood what God was doing. But later, you could see His hand in ways you hadn’t recognized before.
Deuteronomy 7:9 reminds us: “Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.” Deuteronomy 7:9
God’s faithfulness isn’t dependent on our ability to understand His plan. He is faithful because of who He is. And when we look back, we can often recognize that He was working in ways we couldn’t see at the time. That doesn’t mean every step will be easy. It doesn’t mean every decision will lead to the outcome we expected. And it doesn’t mean we’ll always understand why God allows certain things in our lives.
But we can know that His character remains unchanged. He is still God. He is still faithful. And we can trust Him with the steps ahead.
Maybe you’re standing at the beginning of something new today. Maybe you’re in the middle of a journey that has taken longer than you expected. Or maybe you’re simply trying to be faithful in the ordinary things God has placed before you. Wherever you are, remember this: You don’t have to figure out the entire journey today; you simply need to walk with Him. Trust Him with the next step. And when tomorrow comes, trust Him with that one, too.
Pause & Ponder
Take a few quiet moments and ask yourself:
- What step of faith is God asking me to take right now?
- Have I been waiting for the whole plan before I am willing to obey?
- What has God already shown me about His faithfulness that I need to remember today?
- Am I leaning on my own understanding, or am I seeking His direction?
- What would it look like for me to trust Him with just the next step?
Anchor Truth
God doesn’t have to show me the whole journey for me to trust Him with the next step.
Today’s Anchor
If there’s something God has been prompting you to do, take a little time today to pray and seek His direction. Open His Word. Ask Him for wisdom. Consider the next step He has placed before you. And if He has made that step clear, don’t let the uncertainty of what comes afterward keep you from obeying Him.
Anchor Point
You may not know where every step will lead, but you can trust the One who is directing your path.
A Prayer for the Next Step
Lord,
You know how much I want to understand the journey ahead. You know the questions I have and the things I wish I could see more clearly. Help me to trust You when I don’t have all the answers. Teach me not to lean on my own understanding, but to acknowledge You in every area of my life. Give me wisdom to recognize the next step You are asking me to take and courage to obey You. When I become anxious about tomorrow, remind me of Your faithfulness today. Help me to walk by faith and not by sight, trusting that You are leading me even when I cannot see the whole way ahead. Thank You for being faithful, patient, and worthy of my trust.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
