Some days the hardest job is being the one who keeps it all together. You hold the house together, you carry the prayer list, you keep showing up for everyone around you, and somewhere along the way you ran out of your own reserves. I have been there, and I can tell you that the strength you are looking for was never meant to come from you. It comes from the Lord, and He gives it freely to the weary.
This is why I keep a Bible verse for encouragement and strength close on the hard days. When my own words run dry, His Word still speaks. What follows is a collection of Scripture I return to again and again, grouped by the kind of day you might be facing.
Some days you need strength for your body, other days courage for your fear, and other days simply words to pray when you cannot find your own. You will find all of that below. Read slowly. Let one verse settle before you move to the next, and let the Lord meet you in it.
Short Bible Verses for Encouragement & Strength
Some days you do not have the energy for a long passage. You need one line to hold on a sticky note, in your car, or across the top of your to-do list. These short verses carry the same weight as the long ones.
Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” The strength is His, and it reaches into everything you face today. You are not doing this alone.
Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Not a help who shows up late. A present help, here in the trouble with you right now.
Nehemiah 8:10: “the joy of the LORD is your strength.” On the days you cannot manufacture joy, His joy becomes the thing that holds you up.
Psalm 28:7: “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped.” He both strengthens you for the fight and shields you in the middle of it.
2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” Your weak place is not a disqualification. It is the very place His strength shows up best.
Psalm 118:14: “The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.” When He is your strength, He also becomes your song, even in a hard season.
Isaiah 12:2: “for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.” Trust can quiet fear, because the One you lean on has already become your salvation.
Habakkuk 3:19: “The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet.” He steadies you on ground that feels too high and too narrow to stand on.
Verses for Strength When You Feel Weak
There is a tiredness that sleep does not fix. If you are weak in body or weary in spirit, these verses are for you. God does not scold the weak. He strengthens them.
Isaiah 40:29-31: “He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Waiting on the Lord is not wasted time. It is how worn-out people get renewed.
2 Corinthians 12:9-10: “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness… for when I am weak, then am I strong.” Paul stopped hiding his weakness once he saw it was the doorway to Christ’s power.
Psalm 73:26: “My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.” Your body may fail and your heart may break, and still God remains the strength underneath it all.
Exodus 15:2: “The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation.” The same God who rescued His people at the sea is the strength you are singing to now.
Ephesians 3:16: “That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man.” God strengthens you from the inside out, in the inner places no one else can see.
Isaiah 41:10: “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Three promises in one verse: I will strengthen, I will help, I will uphold.
Psalm 29:11: “The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.” He gives strength and peace to the same people, and today that includes you.
Colossians 1:11: “Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness.” Some seasons call for the kind of strength that simply keeps going with patience, and He supplies that too.
Verses for Courage When You Are Afraid
Fear has a way of shrinking your world. These verses are God telling His people, over and over, not to be afraid. He says it so often because He knows we need to hear it so often.
Joshua 1:9: “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” Courage here is a command rooted in a promise. He is with you everywhere you go.
Deuteronomy 31:6: “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” He will not fail you, and He will not walk away. Both are true at once.
Isaiah 41:13: “For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” Picture it. The Lord holds your hand and speaks calm over you.
Psalm 27:1: “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” When the Lord is the strength of your life, fear loses its grip on you.
2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Fear is not from Him. Power, love, and a steady mind are the gifts He gives instead.
Psalm 56:3: “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” Fear and faith can share the same moment. You can be afraid and still choose to trust.
Deuteronomy 31:8: “And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.” He goes before you into tomorrow. You are never walking into it first or alone.
Words of Encouragement From the Bible for a Friend
Sometimes the person who needs the verse is not you. You have a friend walking through grief, waiting on a diagnosis, or quietly falling apart. These are words of encouragement from the Bible you can send to her today.
1 Thessalonians 5:11: “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.” God designed us to build each other up. Your text message can be the brick she needs today.
Galatians 6:2: “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” You cannot carry her load for her, but you can get under one corner of it with her.
Isaiah 40:31: “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Remind her that waiting is not the same as being forgotten. Renewal is coming.
Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” God does not start something in a person and abandon it halfway. He finishes what He begins.
Numbers 6:24-26: “The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.” This is one of the oldest blessings in Scripture. Speak it over her like a prayer.
Deuteronomy 33:27: “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” When she feels like she is falling, this is the promise that there is a bottom, and it is Him.
Psalm 34:18: “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Tell her that her broken heart does not push God away. It draws Him near.
Encouraging Verses to Pray Over Your Day
Scripture was never meant to stay on the page. These verses become powerful when you pray them back to God. Pray these over your morning, your work, and the people in your care.
Psalm 143:8: “Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.” Lord, let the first voice I hear today be Yours, and show me the way to walk.
Psalm 90:17: “And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.” Father, settle my hands and make the work I do today count for You.
Psalm 51:10: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Lord, before I pour out for anyone else, make my own heart clean and my spirit right.
Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Help me stop striving long enough to remember that You are God and I am not.
Lamentations 3:22-23: “It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” Thank You that Your mercy meets me fresh at sunrise, before I have earned a thing.
How to Hold Onto These Verses
Reading a verse once rarely changes a hard day. Holding onto it does. Here is how I keep Scripture within reach when my heart is heavy.
Write one verse down by hand. There is something about moving a verse through your own pen that moves it into your heart. Keep it on a card in your purse or taped to your bathroom mirror.
Make one verse your phone wallpaper for the week. You check your phone dozens of times a day, so let one of those moments preach to you.
Pray the verse back to God in your own words. You do not need a formula. Tell Him what the verse stirs up and ask Him to make it real in you.
Say it out loud. There is power in hearing truth in your own voice, especially when the lies in your head are loud. Speak the verse over your morning before the day has a chance to speak fear over you.
Share it with one other woman. When you send a verse to a friend, it preaches to you a second time as you type it. Encouragement grows when you give it away, and you often end up strengthened by the very words you meant for someone else.
If writing Scripture steadies you the way it steadies me, I made something to help you build the habit. You can start with my free printable scripture writing plan and let one verse a day carry you through the next month.
You Were Never Meant to Carry This Alone
If you came here worn thin, I pray you leave anchored. A Bible verse for encouragement and strength will not erase the hard thing you are facing, but it will remind you who is holding you in the middle of it. His grace is sufficient. His strength shows up in your weakness. His arms are underneath you even now.
I have prayed over these verses in my own hard seasons, and I have watched the Lord use them to steady women all around me. He does not ask you to drum up strength from an empty tank. He asks you to come to Him weak and let Him be strong on your behalf. That is not a failure. That is faith.
Keep going, one verse and one day at a time. When your strength gives out, His is only beginning. For more of these, visit my collection of encouraging Bible verses for women and my Bible verses about hope in hard times.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good Bible verse for encouragement & strength?
Isaiah 41:10 is one of the most beloved, because God promises in a single verse to strengthen you, help you, and uphold you. Philippians 4:13 and Psalm 46:1 are also short enough to memorize and carry with you through a hard day.
What does the Bible say about finding strength in hard times?
Scripture teaches that real strength comes from God rather than from ourselves. Isaiah 40:29-31 says He gives power to the faint, and 2 Corinthians 12:9 says His strength is “made perfect in weakness.” Your weak place is where His power meets you.
What Bible verse can I send to encourage a friend?
Numbers 6:24-26, Philippians 1:6, and Psalm 34:18 are gentle verses to send to a friend who is hurting. They remind her that God keeps her, finishes what He starts in her, and draws near to the brokenhearted.
How do I memorize Bible verses for encouragement?
Pick one short verse and write it by hand several times, set it as your phone wallpaper, and pray it back to God during the day. Repetition and prayer move a verse from your head into your heart faster than reading alone.
Why do I feel weak even when I am praying & reading the Bible?
Feeling weak is not a sign of weak faith. Even faithful believers like Paul lived with weakness, and God used it to display His strength. Keep leaning on Him, because His grace is sufficient for you exactly where you are.
