Scripture Focus: Psalm 24:1
“The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” Psalm 24:1
One of the greatest misconceptions we can develop as believers is believing we are the owners of what God has merely entrusted to us. It often happens so gradually that we don’t even notice. We begin referring to “my” home, “my” family, “my” ministry, “my” money, “my” career, and “my” plans. Before long, our desire to faithfully care for these blessings quietly shifts into something else, a need to control them.
The difference between stewardship and control is subtle, but it is significant. Stewardship says, “Lord, this belongs to You. Show me how to care for it.” Control says, “This belongs to me, and I must make sure everything goes according to my plans.” The first leads to peace. The second often leads to anxiety, frustration, and exhaustion.
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed trying to keep everything together, perhaps God isn’t asking you to hold tighter. Perhaps He’s inviting you to let go.
The Bible settles the ownership question in a single verse: “The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof…”
God owns everything.
That includes our possessions, our abilities, our relationships, our opportunities, our ministries, and even our very lives. We arrived with nothing, and everything we have has been graciously placed into our hands by our Heavenly Father.
This realization changes everything.
When we understand that we are managers rather than owners, our perspective begins to shift. Instead of asking, “How can I protect what’s mine?” we begin asking, “Lord, how can I faithfully manage what You’ve entrusted to me?”
Stewardship isn’t about possessing more. It’s about honoring the One who possesses it all.
Control rarely announces itself. It often disguises itself as responsibility.
We convince ourselves that if we worry enough, plan enough, manage enough, or work hard enough, we can guarantee the outcomes we desire.
But Scripture reminds us: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5
Control says, “Everything depends on me.” Faith says, “Everything depends on God, and He has invited me to faithfully do my part.” There is a tremendous difference.
God never called us to control every outcome. He called us to trust Him while faithfully carrying out the responsibilities He has given us.
In today’s culture, success is often measured by influence, accomplishments, numbers, or recognition. God measures something entirely different.
“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:2
Notice what the verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t say successful. It doesn’t say impressive. It doesn’t say influential. It says faithful.
Whether God has entrusted you with raising children, serving in your church, leading a ministry, caring for aging parents, building a business, or encouraging one hurting friend, your calling is the same:
Be faithful.
Our responsibility is obedience. God’s responsibility is the outcome.
Many of us are exhausted because we’re trying to carry burdens God never assigned to us. We cannot control another person’s heart. We cannot force spiritual growth in someone else. We cannot guarantee tomorrow. We cannot orchestrate every circumstance. Only God can do those things.
Psalm 46:10 offers a simple but powerful invitation:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Being still doesn’t mean becoming passive. It means remembering who is actually in control. We continue serving, continue praying, and continue obeying. And we stop trying to be God. There is tremendous freedom in knowing that His shoulders are far stronger than ours.
Imagine holding a handful of sand. The tighter you squeeze, the more slips through your fingers. The same is often true in life. The harder we cling to control, the more anxiety increases. The more we trust God with open hands, the more peace fills our hearts.
Psalm 37:5 reminds us:
“Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”
Living with open hands doesn’t mean we stop planning or stop caring. It means every plan is submitted to Him. Every blessing is held loosely. Every decision is surrendered, and every outcome is trusted to the One who sees the beginning and the end. That is biblical stewardship.
God is the Owner of everything; I am called to faithfully steward what He has entrusted to my care.
Identify one area of your life that you’ve been trying to control. Surrender it to the Lord in prayer today, then ask Him to show you how to faithfully steward it instead of striving to control the outcome.
When God owns it, you don’t have to control it. Faithful stewardship begins with open hands and a surrendered heart.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me that everything I have ultimately belongs to You. Forgive me for the times I’ve clung too tightly to what You have entrusted to my care. Help me to be a faithful steward instead of someone who tries to control what only You can control.
Teach me to trust You with my family, my resources, my ministry, my future, and every blessing You’ve placed in my hands. Give me the wisdom to faithfully manage what You’ve entrusted to me and the humility to leave the results in Your capable hands.
May my life reflect complete dependence upon You and joyful obedience to Your will.
